PS3 processing power to be explored by IT|Redux

Posted on September 5th, 2007 at 16:30 EDT

New ways to utilize the PlayStation 3 console for processing power will be discussed in an upcoming presentation by IT|Redux.

The company announced it would showcase ways to use the system as a powerful computing device during an "Office 2.0" Conference in San Francisco, CA on September 5-7, 2007.

The processing support that PS3 could offer was detailed further, with senior manager of the Web Portal for Sony Computer Entertainment America, Oliver Marks, commenting: “Installing Linux and Firefox on the PS3 enables Sony customers to not only enjoy games and entertainment in the living room but also take advantage of some of the Web browser-based office productivity applications available online today."

Marks further added: “The Office 2.0 conference is a great opportunity for Sony to showcase the PS3 system’s computing power and productivity capabilities.”

To date, the PS3’s process powering has been used for a number of endeavours including aiding in various scientific calculations, as seen in Sony’s Folding@home initiative for Stanford University.

Stay tuned for more developments as they break.

They do have a version of Linux that we can all put on our PS3's, it's called Yellow Dog Linux. Look it up, there are plenty of guides online that tell you how to install.

It is a powerful machine, and as much as I love my 360, the Cell processor is more powerful in terms of TFLOPS per second and hardware threads.  Im excited to see what people can do with this powerhouse of a machine.

oh yeah, guys. (whow nice moon out tonight!)

I've had this little conundrum I've been mulling over for quite some time now I was hoping you guys could help me out with problem I've been dealing with ...

There a man different Linux OS compatible with Playstation 3. What I'd like to know is which Linux OS should I choose? I'd really like a nice robust one that has a lot of support features (anti-virus & Programming etc.) That is very stylish, adaptable and versatile.

I really don’t know too much about the OS available; so what do you guys recommend? which OS should I opt for?

I run Folding everyday, when I am not playing my games, or using my console. I have been running my PS3 non-stop, (never shut off), for about 51/2 months now. Thats not even including the 3 months of gaming I pumped into it, befor Folding came out in March, and im even running the advanced processing programe, to push my machine even harder. This thing doesn't even flinch, IT WANT'S MORE!! Best piece of hardware on the market, for gaming, it WILL NOT fail on you, no bs.

@XenoSilvano

Although you can get AntiVirus software for Linux, there is no realistic need.

There are many reasons for this, the biggest being the secuity built into Linux (many of the features developed by the NSA), the second being that any transfered executable via the net, IM, etc, is not allowed to run unless you give it permisson.  This leaves only Linux specific trojans, and since MS still has majority (Desktop) market share, so there are no Virus developers targeting Linux in this way, and the most they could do, assuming you dont use the admin account as your normal account, is corrupt the individual users account that got the Virus or ran the Trojan.

As for which to choose.  On the PC I would choose Sabayon, but on the PS3 I would choose Kubuntu or Xubuntu.  But in the end it doesnt really matter because they all have access to all the same programs, and are all built from the same Linux Kernel.  So if one has something another doesnt, it only takes seconds to add it.
